The family of Mahendra Vishwakarma, a mechanical fitter at a hydropower project in Nepal, is anxiously awaiting news after he went missing following devastating flash floods in the region. Vishwakarma made a call at 8 am on August 25, which turned out to be the last contact they had with him. His younger brother, Vikas, shared with The Indian Express, "We could not answer the call for some reason. After that, his calls stopped coming, and his number also stopped connecting. Maybe he was calling to tell us about the flood."
Context of the Disaster
The floods, triggered by a glacier collapse, have resulted in a tragic death toll of 626, with many individuals, including Indian nationals, still unaccounted for. Families like that of Vishwakarma, aged 50, are left in despair as they fear the worst. Vishwakarma had been working with ANDRITZ Hydropower in Nepal since April.
After missing his call, the family learned about the floods and has been desperately trying to locate him. Authorities informed them that several workers were missing, and search efforts were ongoing. Vikas stated, "Since August 26, there has been no contact. We have tried repeatedly, but his phone is neither connecting nor have we received any information."
