Blackpool, Sheffield, Milton Keynes, and Wrexham have been shortlisted to be the UK City of Culture 2029, an award aimed at boosting local economies, fostering civic pride, and providing entertainment. Each of the four locations was selected from a longlist of nine and will receive £125,000 to develop their bids before the winner is announced in the new year.
Funding and Impact
The winning city will be awarded an additional £10 million to fund a series of events and initiatives that have historically created jobs, increased arts engagement, and attracted tourists. Previous winners, including Derry (2013), Hull (2017), Coventry (2021), and Bradford (2025), have reported transformative effects and lasting legacies from their designations.
Wrexham's Aspirations
Before the shortlist was revealed, Wrexham was the bookmakers' favorite to win. The city has gained attention after its football team was purchased by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Mark Pritchard, Wrexham’s council leader, expressed excitement about the shortlist, stating, "We’re on the map and on the up. Our reputation is growing." He acknowledged the socioeconomic challenges the city faces but emphasized that winning would help build confidence and showcase Wrexham's true potential.
