India's Zee Entertainment has filed a request with the Delhi High Court to initiate contempt proceedings against the Reliance-Disney joint venture JioStar, alleging that it continues to use copyrighted content despite a court injunction.
Background of the Dispute
The legal filing, dated September 21, escalates an ongoing copyright dispute between the two companies. Zee claims that JioStar is guilty of "wilful disobedience" for using Zee's music and songs in its programs, despite a court order barring such use.
JioStar's Response
JioStar, formed from the $8.5 billion merger of Reliance and Disney's Indian media assets in 2024, has declined to comment on the allegations. Zee has not responded to requests for comment either.
Court Proceedings
The copyright case was heard on Friday, where the Delhi High Court asked JioStar to respond to Zee's latest allegations. The case is scheduled to be heard again in December.
