Walmart is taking a bold step into the future of commerce with the launch of its Agent Gateway, designed to manage transactions and enhance features for customers utilizing AI agents. This announcement was made on Wednesday, shortly after Amazon implemented restrictions on AI agents making purchases on behalf of online shoppers.

Embracing AI Technology

Walmart's decision to embrace AI technology sets it apart from competitors, including Amazon and various travel and booking sites, which have opted to block AI agents entirely. John Furner, Walmart's President and CEO, highlighted the company's commitment to this technology during his speech at the Masters of Scale Summit in San Francisco.

Walmart had previously partnered with Meta's Muse and is now expanding its offerings to include integrations with popular AI applications like ChatGPT and Gemini. The new technology aims to prepare Walmart for a future where AI agents are commonplace.

Features of the Agent Gateway

The Agent Gateway is built on Walmart's new MCP server, which facilitates connections between approved agents and Walmart through the model context protocol (MCP). This protocol, developed by Anthropic, enables AI agents to access external data sources and tools, allowing them to search Walmart's online inventory and make purchases on behalf of users.
