Pope Leo XIV returned to St Peter's Square on Wednesday for his weekly general audience, following a successful operation to remove a cancerous growth from his lung. His doctors have confirmed that no further treatment is necessary after the surgery.
Health Update
Test results on tissue removed during the operation confirmed that the Pope had a lung adenocarcinoma, as initially diagnosed, and that the disease was localized. According to a statement shared by the Vatican, "A subsequent oncological assessment has confirmed that no further treatment is necessary."
The 71-year-old pontiff was discharged from Rome's Gemelli Hospital over the weekend, just four days after his operation. He took a moment to speak to well-wishers as he left the hospital grounds.
