Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed feelings of personal betrayal by former US President Donald Trump after reports emerged that Ukraine's military access to Elon Musk's Starlink satellite communications has been restricted. This development raises concerns about the long-term support from the US for Kyiv amid ongoing conflict with Russia.
Context of the Situation
During a visit to London, Zelenskyy accused Trump of siding with the enemy after more than four years of war. He highlighted the strain in US-Ukraine relations, particularly following the US's decision to purchase diesel from Moscow. In a television interview, Zelenskyy was asked about the sudden restriction of Starlink and whether he felt betrayed by Trump. He responded:
“"Really, yes … but it’s a little bit more complicated than just my emotions or my feelings. It’s a pity that we are losing, we are losing a strong partner."
Developments in Military Operations
Reports indicate that Ukraine's military faced a sudden outage of the Starlink system, which is managed by the US government. This outage rendered many of Ukraine's drones inoperable, significantly impacting their ability to conduct operations behind enemy lines. Zelenskyy stated:
“"I am sure they knew what they did, absolutely. Because it was 1am at night, Starlink was blocked by SpaceX and the United States. This decision will bring a lot of human losses … Of course, people will die."
