British authorities were unable to investigate the case of Christopher Mooty, an airman who allegedly committed drink-driving in Suffolk, due to the US military's failure to notify them of the incident. This oversight violated a longstanding agreement that allows UK police to investigate alleged crimes committed by US military personnel stationed in Britain.

Incident Overview

The incident occurred in the early hours of March 4, 2023, when Mooty, after a night of drinking with two fellow American service members, drove them to a kebab shop. The allegation of drink-driving was later reported to his commanders, who handled the matter internally. This raises concerns about how many other US military personnel in the UK may have committed crimes without British police being informed.

Mooty, then a 21-year-old airman stationed at the United States Air Force (USAF) base in Mildenhall, had spent the night drinking at a pub in Newmarket. Evidence from his disciplinary hearing indicated that he consumed two to three bottles of beer and two to three vodka Red Bulls over several hours. After feeling hungry, he drove to a kebab shop at around 4 AM.

During the drive, Mooty exchanged messages with a British woman he had been dating, who suspected he was intoxicated. She later described him as "the most drunk I’ve ever seen him" when he visited her home that night. Concerned for public safety, she reported him to his superiors at Mildenhall, stating, "He is endangering the lives of the people in this country and should not be here."
