UK authorities are facing calls to intervene as the online prediction market Polymarket has been taking substantial bets on the potential failure of major banks, including HSBC and Lloyds Banking Group. The platform has allowed users to place $77,507 (£58,530) in wagers on whether these banks will collapse by the end of the year.

Concerns Over Market Integrity

Polymarket, a US-owned company, facilitates betting on a wide range of topics, from sports events to speculative scenarios like bank failures. While users from the UK, US, Canada, and EU are prohibited from betting on the platform, individuals from approximately 150 countries can still participate, raising concerns about the potential for financial instability.

The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has acknowledged the issue, stating it is in discussions with international regulators to address the implications of prediction markets on market integrity. There are increasing worries about insider trading and market manipulation on Polymarket, which could exacerbate risks for the banking sector.

The Risk of Bank Runs

The banking industry is already on alert for the possibility of social media-driven bank runs, where customers rapidly withdraw funds. The collapses of Silicon Valley Bank and Credit Suisse in 2023 were partly fueled by stock sell-offs and bank runs accelerated by speculation on social media platforms.
