Katie Zacharia, the newly appointed White House press secretary, stated that it is "unknown" how frequently she will engage with the media or hold press briefings. This comes amid scrutiny regarding her legal qualifications following her first press briefing, which received widespread criticism.
Background
In an interview with the Guardian on Thursday, Zacharia described the rapid process that led to her appointment as the chief spokesperson for Donald Trump. Just six days after receiving a call from the White House, she stepped behind the podium for her first briefing.
On October 7, a White House official contacted Zacharia, asking her to travel from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. for a meeting. She did not disclose the identity of the caller. The following day, she made the trip and met with officials on Pennsylvania Avenue. Later that day, she was offered the position and accepted it.
“"I flew home, packed two bags, said hi to my kids and husband and dogs," Zacharia told the Guardian, before returning to Washington on Sunday ahead of her first day on Monday.
First Briefing
Zacharia's initial press briefing, which she stated she was "asked to do" on her second day, was criticized for being lackluster. During the briefing, reporters inquired about her legal credentials, specifically asking her to name the state where she passed the bar exam.
“"When I moved to China," she responded, later clarifying to the New York Times that she had "misheard" the question due to the noise from Marine One on the South Lawn. However, she did not confirm whether she had passed the bar exam.
According to her LinkedIn profile, after graduating from Pepperdine University’s law school in 2011, Zacharia worked as an "associate" at the Beijing law firm Zhong Lun from 2011 to 2013. Reports from the Wall Street Journal indicated that she failed the California bar exam after graduating. The State Bar of California confirmed to the Guardian that there is no record of her being licensed in the state under either her married name or her maiden name, Katie Black.
