Jason O’Connell, a Reform UK Senedd member, has sparked controversy after his suspected use of smart glasses during a recent speech in the Senedd. The incident has reignited discussions about the implications of AI-enabled devices in parliamentary settings.
Controversial Speech
During a five-minute address, O’Connell delivered a speech filled with precise statistics without referring to his notes. He stated, “Cardiff reviewed 192 roads, following 933 requests, and only four routes have returned to 30mph,” as he advocated for the abolition of 20mph traffic zones. He further claimed, “£38.3m wasted to implement this policy and up to £8.9bn in an act of economic self-harm.” However, the periodic flashing of his spectacles led to suspicions that he was using smart glasses that functioned as teleprompters.
Calls for Action
In the aftermath, members of the Senedd expressed the need for urgent guidance on the use of smart glasses, which have gained popularity due to Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta. There are no allegations that O’Connell’s glasses were recording, but the situation has prompted calls for a ban on such devices within Westminster. The Liberal Democrats have formally requested Lindsay Hoyle, the Commons speaker, to address the growing use of smart glasses on the parliamentary estate.
