In its first launch since January, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully sent an earth observation satellite, EOS-05, into space early Friday morning using a GSLV rocket. This launch marks a significant turnaround after three failed missions in 2025 and 2026, where the satellites were unable to reach their intended orbits.
About EOS-05
The EOS-05 is India’s first dedicated imaging satellite to be placed in geosynchronous orbit, approximately 36,000 km from Earth. This positioning allows it to maintain a constant watch over the country and provide real-time imaging services. With a mission life of 10 years, the satellite is designed to:
- Monitor natural disasters
- Track agriculture and forestry
- Serve defense purposes
Unlike other active earth observation satellites in lower-earth orbits, which circle the Earth and capture imagery periodically, the EOS-05 remains stationary relative to Earth, enabling continuous observation of the same region without gaps.
Launch Details
The GSLV-F17 rocket successfully deposited the EOS-05 satellite into a transfer orbit at an altitude of over 190 km from Earth, approximately 18 minutes after launch. The satellite will perform a series of orbit-raising maneuvers over the next few days to reach its final destination in geosynchronous orbit.
