Experts say Russia is trying to destroy energy infrastructure before winter, and US ‘appeasement and flattery’ will not achieve peace.
Overview
Russia has carried out a massive "demonstrative" attack on Ukraine, bombarding Kyiv with ballistic missiles just hours after Vladimir Putin announced an agreement to resume trilateral negotiations following talks with US envoy Steve Witkoff. Overnight, Moscow targeted the Ukrainian capital, resulting in at least two fatalities and 22 injuries, including four children.
Attack Details
The missile strikes hit various locations, including:
- The southern bridge over the Dnipro River
- Civilian houses
- Energy infrastructure
- An ambulance station
- Office buildings
- A monastery
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president, reported that numerous sites across the city had been damaged. The assault extended to twelve regions nationwide, including the southern city of Odesa, where the port suffered significant damage.
Reaction from Ukraine
Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, stating:
“"Almost immediately after another round of talks, Russia launched a pointed attack. This means there has been no real change in its attitude toward everything that is happening."
In a social media post following the strikes, he remarked:
“"Three waves of ballistic missiles have been launched at Kyiv by Russian ‘humanitarians’ since yesterday evening. They used 21 missiles."
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Ukraine's western partners who recognized the reality of the situation, emphasizing the need for stronger air defenses, including Patriot interceptors, and additional sanctions against Moscow.
Diplomatic Context
Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine’s foreign minister, asserted that “appeasement, servility and flattery” would not deter Russian aggression. On Wednesday, Yuri Ushakov, a Kremlin foreign affairs adviser, indicated that Putin had agreed “in principle” to resume three-way negotiations involving Russia, the US, and Ukraine after November 10, following the US midterm elections.
