As the Indian economy posted a real GDP growth rate of 7.8% in the April-June quarter, the government and the Opposition engaged in a war of words. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the growth as a “herculean feat,” while the Congress party criticized it as a “Greatly Distorted Picture” of the economy.
Economic Performance
India’s GDP grew 7.8% in the April-June quarter, surpassing the Reserve Bank of India’s estimate of 7%. However, elevated crude oil prices, food inflation, and a strengthening El Niño pose risks to the growth outlook.
In a post on X, PM Modi stated, “India’s exemplary GDP growth of 7.8% during Q1 of FY 2026-27 is a herculean feat.” He added, “The collective strength of our people ensured India delivered such growth despite oil price shocks and supply chain issues in the midst of global uncertainties. Doomsayers were doomed and India bloomed … yet again.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah echoed Modi’s sentiments, asserting that the Indian economy has once again triumphed over global uncertainties, showcasing the “visionary” leadership of PM Modi. He remarked, “Once again, the Indian economy has trumped global uncertainties and secured a GDP growth of 7.8% in Q1 of FY 2026-27.”
