Retailer Marks and Spencer (M&S) made a bold statement at its first-ever London Fashion Week (LFW) catwalk show, showcasing a collection that emphasizes accessible fashion. The event, held at the Design Museum, attracted 310 guests, including celebrities like Ian Wright and Jamie Carragher.
A New Fashion Message
The show aimed to convey the message of "fashion with a small f," according to Maddy Evans, M&S womenswear director. The collection featured sharp kilts and low-rise slouchy denim, appealing to a broad audience while maintaining a comfortable aesthetic. The show included elements of catwalk theatre, such as short skirts and trendy accessories, to keep the presentation engaging.
Affordable Prices
One of the standout features of the collection was its pricing. All pieces went on sale as the show commenced, with half priced under £50. The most expensive item, a leather coat, is set to retail for £450. This pricing strategy aims to make catwalk style accessible to everyone, especially during a time when designer prices have surged amid a cost-of-living crisis.
Contemporary Wardrobe Trends
The collection reflects current wardrobe trends, focusing on a neutral color palette with pops of red for both men and women. M&S showcased menswear staples, including a classic grey office suit worn by Lennon Gallagher and chore jackets. The brand has now positioned itself as the second most recognized in style perception, following Zara.
