The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has announced new measures to combat Unsolicited Commercial Communications (UCC) by tightening its regulations and incorporating artificial intelligence-based detection of suspected spam. This update was made public on September 18, 2026, and aims to enhance consumer protection against spam calls.
Key Features of the New Regulations
- Identification of Spam Numbers: Telecom service providers are now required to identify numbers that have a high probability of being used for sending spam. This information must be shared among service providers.
- Investigation Protocol: If five or more numbers associated with a sender are flagged within a 10-day period, further investigations will be initiated. Actions may include:
- KYC re-verification
- Physical verification
- Barring of outgoing services
- Disconnection for repeated violations
