Supporters from around Australia have rallied behind the Black Wreath, a volunteer-run heavy metal venue in Alice Springs, which has successfully raised $1 million through a month-long crowdfunding campaign to secure its future.
A Unique Venue in the Desert
With a population of 34,000, Alice Springs has only one dedicated live music space, the Black Wreath, located 1,500 km from the nearest city. Over the past decade, this venue has hosted hundreds of bands, serving as a vital resource for musicians in central Australia.
When the venue's operators learned last year that the owners planned to sell, they negotiated a temporary reprieve and launched a fundraiser to buy the venue and place it in a trust. The crowdfunding campaign reached its $1 million target on Friday.
Overwhelming Support
Pirate, the founder and creative director of the Black Wreath, expressed his gratitude, stating, "I haven’t quite processed it. We’re feeling very overwhelmed and a lot of gratitude." Donations ranged from $20 to $10,000, coming from supporters across the country.
The funds will help keep the Black Wreath operational, allowing local musicians a space to perform and aiming to make Alice Springs a year-round touring destination for artists.
Next Steps for the Black Wreath
Despite the successful fundraising, Pirate noted that this is just "step one" in securing the venue's future. The owners have an asking price of $1.23 million, which exceeds the amount raised. Pirate plans to seek additional funding through philanthropy and by reaching out to major bands for support.
