Unknown gunmen have raided a remote village in the northeast Nigerian state of Taraba, killing at least 10 people, looting shops, and setting houses ablaze, according to police reports. Eyewitnesses suggest that the actual death toll may be much higher, with some claiming 20 lives lost and a non-governmental organization estimating as many as 50 fatalities.

Attack Details

The gunmen reportedly swooped on the village of Binnari in the Karim Lamido area mounted on motorcycles just after midday Muslim prayers on Friday. The rampage lasted for up to four hours. Police are currently searching for other casualties in the surrounding bush, but Amnesty International has accused the authorities of failing to protect rural communities.

Ongoing Insecurity

Nigeria continues to face attacks by armed groups across several regions, including the northwest, northeast, and central areas. The country is also battling a jihadist insurgency in its northeast that has persisted for nearly two decades, drawing ongoing criticism of the government's handling of insecurity.
