Geothermal energy company Fervo has secured a significant deal as Google agreed to purchase nearly half a gigawatt of electricity to power a planned new data center in Utah. The power purchase agreement, announced on Tuesday, commits Google to buying 396 megawatts from Fervo’s Cape Station power plant, which is expected to come online in 2028.
Additional Purchase Options
Google also has the option to buy an additional 600 megawatts through June 2030. This deal comes at a time when Google and other hyperscalers are actively seeking new sources of electricity. For years, Google has been one of the largest purchasers of clean energy in the U.S. and beyond, sourcing electricity from wind, solar, and batteries to fulfill its commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030.
Challenges to Sustainability Goals
However, in April, achieving this goal became more challenging after Google signed a deal with data center developer Crusoe for 933 megawatts of natural gas power in Texas. The Fervo agreement could assist Google in advancing its AI ambitions while still working towards its net-zero target.
