On September 24, 1961, Walt Disney introduced a character inspired by early Space Age rocket scientists: Ludwig Von Drake, the brilliant and eccentric uncle of Donald Duck. This character was designed to explain scientific principles and technological concepts to millions of viewers of Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color on NBC.
A Unique Character
Von Drake was described as the "outstanding genius of the century" by Disney himself. He addressed various topics, including how color television works and the history of aviation. However, it was in the February 10, 1963, episode titled "Inside Outer Space" that he truly delved into space exploration.
“"You people out there are going to see stars you have never seen before… when you go traveling in outer space. In fact, there are going to be a lot of things out there you don’t know about, but don’t let it bother you, ’cause all of the answers is right in here," Von Drake stated in the animated segment.
