The Madhya Pradesh government has removed Dr. Rahul Mishra from his position as superintendent of Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Rewa. This decision comes just days after a video surfaced, allegedly showing him making an insensitive remark to the family of a pregnant woman who died alongside her newborn.
Background
An order issued by the state Public Health and Medical Education Department on September 1 transferred the charge of the hospital to Dr. Priyank Sharma, a professor in the general surgery department, "until further orders." The order did not specify the reasons for this change.
The controversy began when a video of Dr. Mishra interacting with the family of Kalpana Mishra, a 25-year-old woman, went viral. In the video, Dr. Mishra was purportedly heard saying, "You got your 22-year-old sister pregnant," while the family questioned the hospital regarding Kalpana's treatment and subsequent death.
Response and Allegations
Dr. Mishra denied the allegations of negligence and later apologized for his remarks, stating, "My deepest sympathies are with the bereaved family. My statement absolutely did not mean what it is being interpreted to mean." However, Jitu Patwari, the president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress, criticized the government for allegedly protecting Dr. Mishra, claiming he had connections to Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Rajendra Shukla. Patwari questioned why Dr. Mishra remained in his position despite the uproar, suggesting that political ties delayed action.
