Heineken has issued a warning to British bars and pubs regarding the potential impact of weight-loss drugs on beer sales. The world’s second-largest brewer cautioned that the increasing popularity of medications like Wegovy and Ozempic could diminish consumers' desire to drink alcohol, leading to fewer pints being ordered in pubs.

Impact of GLP-1 Drugs

In a presentation shared with British hospitality customers earlier this month, Heineken highlighted that the use of GLP-1 drugs may result in a sense of fullness, which could change traditional drinking habits. The document, disclosed by Reuters, suggested that the era of GLP-1 could make multi-pint drinking sessions less common.

Recommendations for Pubs

To mitigate potential declines in customer visits and spending, Heineken recommended several strategies:

  • Promote half pints and low- or zero-alcohol options.
  • Pair drinks with small plates of food.

Rising Popularity of Weight-Loss Drugs

The use of GLP-1 medications has surged as many consumers seek quick solutions for weight loss. Research by JP Morgan indicated that approximately 10 million people in the US turned to these medications last year. Heineken noted that the presentation was part of its ongoing engagement with UK businesses to help them adapt to evolving consumer habits.
