Amazon is leveraging AI to combat scams, as announced on Wednesday. The retailer revealed that approximately 360,000 customers each year contact its customer service to verify the authenticity of messages they receive from Amazon. Now, customers can utilize Amazon’s consumer AI service, Alexa for Shopping, to determine whether a message is legitimate or a scam.

How It Works

The AI can "definitively" confirm if a communication originated from Amazon by cross-referencing it against billions of messages sent globally. It analyzes various factors, including:

  • Sender information
  • Content of the message
  • Timing
  • Message metadata

This analysis helps ascertain the authenticity of the communication. Amazon stated that the system will improve over time as customers report more suspicious messages, enhancing its ability to identify scams.
