An amateur archaeologist in western Germany has made a remarkable discovery, unearthing a hoard of 934 Roman silver denarii buried in a field south of Cologne. This find, which dates back to the second century AD, is the largest coin treasure ever found in Germany from the era of Emperor Hadrian.
Discovery Details
Oliver Riedl, the amateur archaeologist, initially found several coins using his metal detector. However, as he continued to dig, the detector kept signaling, indicating that there was something much larger buried beneath the surface. Riedl promptly contacted the authorities, leading to a team of experts who began excavating the site.
The hoard, weighing 3.1 kg (6.8 lb), was displayed at the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn on Tuesday. According to the LVR Office for the Preservation of Archaeological Monuments in the Rhineland, the collection was likely buried intentionally in the second quarter of the second century AD.
