Air pollution is associated with an increased risk of suicide and suicidal thoughts, according to recent research. Scientists at Queen’s University Belfast conducted a meta-analysis of 29 studies to explore the influence of various types of pollution on suicide risk, including air, noise, light, and water pollution.

Key Findings

The analysis revealed that exposure to airborne small particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide is linked to a heightened risk of:

  • Death by suicide
  • Suicide attempts
  • Suicidal ideation

Additionally, a narrative analysis of 16 other studies suggested that other air pollutants, such as sulphur dioxide and ozone, as well as noise pollution, may also be associated with a higher suicide risk. However, the evidence regarding light and water pollution was inconclusive.

Implications for Suicide Prevention

The findings, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, indicate that environmental pollution should be considered in suicide prevention strategies. The authors emphasized:

"These findings bring to attention the critical importance of recognising environmental exposures as modifiable risk factors within suicide prevention efforts."

They suggested that integrating environmental health into mental health policy through cross-sectoral collaboration and targeted public health interventions could play a vital role in reducing suicide risk and improving overall population mental wellbeing.
