Donald Trump's recent remark suggesting that Iran could "take out" Los Angeles and San Diego has ignited a strong backlash from California politicians and prompted a firm response from the White House. The comments were made during a campaign rally in Nebraska, where Trump stated, "Let them take out Los Angeles, let them take out San Diego."
Political Reactions
California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned Trump's statement as "deranged and dangerous," while LA Mayor Karen Bass characterized the remarks as threats and an attempt to "encourage attacks on American lives." In response, the White House clarified that Trump was indicating that American cities would have been at risk from Iran had he not initiated military action earlier this year.
Both Los Angeles and San Diego are home to significant U.S. military installations, including Navy ports and Air Force bases.
Trump's Comments
During his speech, Trump remarked:
“"It's a small price to pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe. They can take out a city. Let them take out Los Angeles, let them take out San Diego."
His comments were met with cheers from parts of the audience. Following the remarks, Governor Newsom directed California's State Threat Assessment Center to monitor the situation, fearing that foreign actors might interpret Trump's words as an invitation to target California.
Local Leaders Respond
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria responded on social media, asserting that the city should not be considered collateral damage in Trump's "reckless war talk."
