Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) chief Prakash Ambedkar on Sunday questioned the Congress workers' silence regarding the ‘purification’ ceremony conducted in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, following a rally by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. His remarks came a day after Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, stated that the purification ceremony amounted to the practice of untouchability.
Context
Ambedkar expressed disappointment that the Congress party took considerable time to respond to what he termed a ‘casteist’ act. He noted, "Khargeji had to express his sorrow over the lack of explicit condemnation of this casteist act by members of his own Congress party." He highlighted that it took Rahul Gandhi 15 days to hold a press conference on the issue, where he presented evidence against those who performed the purification.
