A 27-year-old finance influencer's suicide in India has sparked allegations of cyberbullying and raised questions about who should provide financial advice to investors. V Harish, known for his popular Instagram account "Finance with Harish," was found dead on Tuesday morning at his home near Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. His death occurred just weeks after his account was disabled by Meta due to complaints of irregularities.

Allegations of Cyberbullying

In a complaint lodged with the police, Harish's father, J Vinayagam, alleged that his son took his life due to online harassment by Jason Samuel, a YouTuber and CEO of the tech-centric venture studio Zemuria. Police arrested Samuel on Thursday, suspecting him of attempting to "extort money from Harish" and posting "defamatory videos against him on social media." As of now, BBC Tamil has not been able to reach Samuel for comment. Earlier, he denied any wrongdoing in a post on X.

The Rise of Financial Content Creators

This tragic incident has highlighted the growing influence of financial content creators in India, where millions of first-time investors increasingly seek market advice on social media. Harish began posting finance and investing videos around five years ago, amassing over 1.3 million followers on Instagram and publishing more than 1,500 videos. He described himself as a financial adviser to "millionaires" and "high-net-worth individuals," using engaging formats like music and film clips to explain financial concepts.

The popularity of his videos coincided with a significant rise in India's retail investor base, especially since the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. The National Stock Exchange reported that it now has over 130 million unique investors registered, up from under 30 million in 2019.
