A 54-year-old teacher who survived a mass shooting at an Oregon elementary school recounted her harrowing experience, stating that she pretended to be dead to avoid further gunfire from the shooter. Becky Drury, a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School, shared her account in a statement to US media following the tragic events of October 15 in Bend, Oregon.
The Incident
Drury described how she attempted to shut her classroom door when the gunman, identified as a 16-year-old former student, shot her. She fell to the floor and said, "I did the only thing I could do, which was to pretend to be dead in the hope he would not shoot me again."
The attack resulted in the deaths of three students and a teacher, with the shooter ultimately being fatally shot by a parent who intervened. Drury explained that she had gone to check on the situation outside her special-education classroom when she spotted the shooter and tried to secure the door.
