The latest downturn in the AI sector has led to a significant decline in global markets on Thursday, with oil prices reaching their highest levels since May amid concerns over the ongoing conflict in Iran.
Market Overview
The S&P 500 fell by 1.2%, marking its worst performance since July, while the Nasdaq composite experienced a sharper decline of 2.6%. Despite the overall market weakness, many non-AI stocks showed resilience, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average gaining 11 points, or less than 0.1%.
AI Sector Struggles
AI-related stocks have faced volatility due to rising costs associated with borrowing for datacenter construction and AI chip purchases. Investors are concerned that the rapid growth in AI stock prices may be unsustainable. Notably, Lam Research, which provides equipment for semiconductor manufacturing, reported profits and revenues that exceeded analysts' expectations for the summer, yet its stock plummeted by 11.8%.
Other major tech companies also saw declines despite reporting positive earnings. Meta Platforms, which is advancing its Muse AI agent, lost 7% after revealing stronger-than-expected revenue, resulting in a loss of tens of billions in market value. The company announced plans to create a new class of stock to fund AI investments.
