Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday criticized Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for his previous remarks regarding the Indian economy. In light of the recent GDP figures released on Monday, PM Modi stated that some individuals were spreading "jhooth ki goonj [echoes of lies]" at a time when India is making significant progress.
Context of the Remarks
PM Modi made these comments during his three-day visit to Kyrgyzstan for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. He specifically referenced Gandhi's nationwide ‘Chhatron ki Goonj’ program, which aims to address various issues faced by students.
The BJP highlighted a tweet from Rahul Gandhi a year ago, where he claimed that the “Indian economy is dead.” In contrast, PM Modi asserted, “India is growing, expanding and moving forward at an unprecedented speed.”
Economic Growth Highlights
Following the release of the RBI’s official data, which indicated a 7.8% expansion in real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the first quarter of FY27 (April–June), PM Modi praised India's strong economic momentum. In a video message shared on X, he attributed this success to the “collective strength” and hard work of the Indian workforce.
