Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed leaders at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit on Tuesday, emphasizing that the ongoing crisis in West Asia illustrates that conflicts in one region can have far-reaching effects. He warned that such conflicts impact global energy security, maritime trade, and supply chains.
Key Remarks on Conflict Resolution
Speaking in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, Modi stated, "The resolution of all tensions and conflicts is possible only through dialogue and diplomacy, not on the battlefield." His comments come as the war in West Asia, which began in February with US and Israeli attacks on Iran, enters its sixth month without resolution.
Modi highlighted that the interconnectedness of today's world means that security issues are no longer confined to their regions. "The Global South bears the brunt of these consequences," he added.
Addressing Terrorism
The Prime Minister also tackled the pressing issue of terrorism, describing it as a significant challenge for humanity. He asserted, "In the fight against it, we cannot limit ourselves to a mere ‘action-reaction’ mindset. We must dismantle the entire ecosystem of terror financing, recruitment, radicalisation, and safe havens."
He called for a unified stance against terrorism, stating, "Countries that use terrorism as an instrument of state policy and provide shelter and support to terrorists must be sent a strong message: terrorism cannot be a strategic asset for anyone." His remarks were made in the presence of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
