On Tuesday, Sony will release Marvel's Wolverine, the biggest game exclusive to the PlayStation 5 this year. Developed by Insomniac, the studio behind the successful Spider-Man titles, which have sold 50 million copies in recent years, this game carries a Pegi-18 rating in the UK. This means children cannot legally purchase the game, which features significant levels of blood, gore, and violence. This represents a gamble for the studio known for some of Sony's biggest hits—will it pay off?
Gameplay Overview
In Marvel's Wolverine, players take on the role of Logan, aka Wolverine, the iconic comic book superhero with self-healing abilities and retractable claws. Players don the famous yellow-and-black outfit and engage in intense combat against hordes of enemies. The combat system is designed to be free-flowing and accessible, allowing Wolverine to stab and slice foes with plenty of blood on display.
- The combat is built around a "rage" meter that fills as players defeat enemies.
- A full meter turns the surroundings grey, enabling swift dispatch of foes.
- Players can unlock various abilities, enhancing their power as they progress through the game.
- A clever system allows players to use accumulated rage to regenerate health.
The game takes about 20 hours to complete, with some players finishing in around 15 hours. Players can regenerate health by mashing the square button after taking damage, ensuring that as long as they maintain their rage meter, they effectively cannot lose.
Design Changes
When Spider-Man was released in 2018, it set a new standard for superhero games with its open-world New York City. However, Insomniac has shifted from this formula for Wolverine, adopting a more linear structure. This means less open exploration and a more curated path through the game world.
