An oval ball in September in Melbourne usually signifies the climax of the Australian rules football (AFL) season. However, on Friday, at the early hour of 7 AM, 100,000 fans will flock to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) for an unusual sporting event—American football. The LA Rams will face the San Francisco 49ers in their opening National Football League (NFL) fixture, marking the first time Australia has hosted a meaningful, non-exhibition regular season game.

The match sold out months in advance, with over half the attendees expected to come from outside the state of Victoria. On the official ticket resale site, a restricted view seat is priced at more than A$650 (approximately £350/US$470).

"Walking down the street, it's AFL finals week and you wouldn't even know," says Thomas McMillan, host of the NFL podcast Any Given Sunday Australia. "It's all NFL everywhere. There are bars that are nothing but 49ers bars or Rams bars. We have a Ram Tram getting around the district. When you're in Melbourne and AFL isn't visible, it shows how big this is at the moment."

Kickoff and Time Zone Challenges

Kickoff is set for 10:35 AM local time on Friday, a schedule that caters to prime time US television demands. The NFL has been hosting international matches since 2007, and these overseas games have become a strategic effort to attract new supporters. This season, nine games outside the US are planned, including three in London. However, Melbourne is the furthest destination for players and US-based fans.

Christian McCaffrey, running back for the 49ers, shared his thoughts at a press conference:

Melbourne is 17 hours ahead of California, where both teams are based. Much of the pre-match focus has been on how the teams will manage jet lag. The 49ers arrived late last week, allowing players to acclimatize and practice locally. In contrast, the LA Rams plan to arrive on Thursday morning on a chartered Qantas A380, aiming to minimize disruption to their body clocks.
