Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, has written to J P Nadda, the Leader of the House, expressing concern that no FIR has been registered regarding the controversial "purification" ritual that took place in Haldwani, Uttarakhand. This comes 24 days after the incident, despite Nadda's previous assurances.
Context of the Issue
Kharge highlighted that he raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha on August 13, following his public meeting in Haldwani on August 8. He described the incident as one that caused him "great sadness and pain." In his letter, Kharge recalled Nadda's response, who had stated, "This is indeed a very sad matter."
“"This is not just sad for the Congress party, but it is sad for all of us … Whatever has happened will certainly have to be investigated," Kharge quoted Nadda.
Kharge noted that Nadda had promised strict action against anyone found guilty after an investigation, and that the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha had also expressed deep anguish over the incident.
