Indian Railways is set to enhance its high-density rail network by four-laning approximately 11,000 km to increase train capacity and alleviate congestion on crucial routes. This infrastructure initiative aims to improve the movement of both passenger and freight trains while bolstering capacity across some of the busiest corridors in the country.

Importance of High-Density Routes

On Wednesday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the significance of seven high-density routes, which collectively carry a substantial portion of the nation’s rail traffic. These routes span nearly 11,000 km and account for around 41% of total railway traffic, despite representing only about 16% of the railway network.

The Minister also pointed out the environmental and economic advantages of rail transport, stating that the expansion is crucial for routes that manage heavy traffic between major cities and regions. More railway lines will enable trains to operate with greater flexibility and help alleviate pressure on existing tracks.
