France's Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has condemned reported violence during ongoing student protests, warning that any escalation would be "irresponsible." This statement follows the arrests of 164 individuals on Monday amid demonstrations that began in Paris and have seen students blockading their schools for several days.

Background of the Protests

The protests have arisen from issues such as overcrowded classes and teacher shortages. In a post on X, Lecornu highlighted incidents of violence, stating:

“

"Fireworks, fires, violence near high schools: nothing justifies endangering students, staff, or police officers."

The Union Syndicale Lycéenne, which advocates for high school students, defended the protests as a "legitimate response" to their challenging conditions.

Injuries and Impact

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported that on Monday, 12 members of the security forces, 12 students, and three school staff were injured, while 180 schools were affected. The protests, which began last week in the Île-de-France region, have now spread to other areas, including Alpes-Maritimes, Var, Marseille, and Lille.
