Argentina's President Javier Milei has threatened to initiate legal action against the British government unless it ceases oil exploration activities off the coast of the Falkland Islands. In a recent social media post, Milei set a two-week deadline for the Sea Lion oilfield project, a joint venture between Israeli and British companies, to be abandoned.
Background
The companies involved in the project maintain that they possess valid licenses issued by the UK. This development escalates tensions between the UK and Argentina regarding the sovereignty of the archipelago, known in Argentina as Las Malvinas. This dispute continues more than 40 years after a British military task force expelled Argentine forces that had invaded the territory in 1982.
Legal Threat
Milei stated that if the two-week deadline is not met, he has "instructed the Foreign Ministry and legal teams to initiate international arbitration" against the UK, accusing it of "the illegal plundering of our resources through the Sea Lion Project." He further warned that if the "illegitimate exploitation" of the region does not cease within the stipulated time, Argentina would escalate the matter to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
