Flu cases in England are reportedly higher than usual for September, prompting experts to recommend vaccination as the best defense against the virus. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has noted above-average flu activity, with various indicators, including positive test rates and GP consultations for influenza-like illness, suggesting an upward trend.
Current Situation
According to UKHSA, the number of emergency department visits for influenza-like illness has exceeded seasonal expectations. The agency reported, "Flu activity throughout September has been higher than in the same period during all past four winter seasons," indicating a rise in flu trends since August.
Expert Recommendations
Prof Sir Andrew Pollard, director of the Oxford Vaccine Group, emphasized the importance of vaccination, stating:
“"There is one simple action for all those who are at risk because of age or their underlying health conditions, which is to get vaccinated as soon as possible and before we reach the peak of transmission."
He noted that while everyone can benefit from the vaccine, free vaccinations are available only for children and those in higher-risk groups. For those not eligible for a free NHS vaccine, options include workplace vaccinations or private purchases, typically costing around £20 at pharmacies, with some retailers offering them for under £10.
