A Florida police officer is facing serious allegations after he reportedly stole the identity and home of a deceased man during a welfare check. Brian Louis Sguros, 35, an officer with the Lauderhill Police Department near Miami, appeared in court on Wednesday facing multiple charges, including criminal use of a deceased person’s identification.

Incident Overview

The incident began in July 2022 when Sguros was part of a team sent to check on Dennis West, a Lauderhill resident, after a concerned neighbor called the police. Upon arrival, officers found West deceased from natural causes.

Allegations Against Sguros

According to a press release from the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), Sguros allegedly initiated a complex scheme to take control of West’s home shortly after the discovery of the body. He falsely represented himself to the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office as West’s friend, claiming that West had no living family, which was later proven to be untrue.

  • Sguros reportedly paid taxes and utilities for the home in West’s name.
  • He used West’s identification to create the illusion that West was still alive, allowing him to obtain a permit from the city of Lauderhill for renovations.
