The National Weather Service in the United States has issued extreme heat warnings for parts of southern California, including Los Angeles, until Thursday. Temperatures are expected to soar into the high 30s Celsius this week, with Burbank, a suburb north of Los Angeles, recording 39°C on Saturday, just shy of the October record set in 1987.

Weather Conditions

A persistent area of high pressure will remain in place this week, leading to hazardous hot weather and an increased risk of wildfires. The extreme heat is expected to exacerbate conditions in the region.

Wildfire Situation in Indonesia

Meanwhile, parts of Indonesia are grappling with an extreme wildfire season, which has peaked over the past month. Regions such as Western Kalimantan (Borneo) and southern Sumatra have been particularly affected. The lack of rainfall has dried out the usually water-logged tropical soils, allowing fires to spread rapidly both above and below the surface.
