Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, inquiring whether the government intends to hold a special session of Parliament to pass the delimitation Bill. He reiterated the demand for an all-party meeting on the issue.
Kharge, who also serves as the Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition, stated that he is writing the letter "to reiterate this request (for all-party meeting) since the Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs (Kiren Rijiju) has publicly stated in a television interview last night that such a special session of Parliament could well be convened."
Context
Kharge's letter follows the Congress party's questioning of the delay in proroguing the Lok Sabha after it had been adjourned sine die for ten days. He asked, "What explains the abnormal delay now? Is the Union Home Minister (Amit Shah) still in search of his bahukalakit (tarnished) 2/3rd majority to get the Constitutional Amendment Bill on Delimitation passed in a Special Session?" This statement was made by Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary (communications), in a post on X.
In his letter, Kharge referenced an earlier correspondence dated July 16, where he requested the Prime Minister to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the government's proposals for delimitation. He emphasized the need for all political parties to have adequate time to study such proposals in detail before they are introduced in any potential special session of Parliament.
