The Ministry of Railways has announced a significant upgrade to the 140-year-old Nepalganj Road-Nanpara-Bahraich rail section in Uttar Pradesh. This 56.15-km route has been converted from metre gauge to Broad Gauge (BG) and electrified at a cost of approximately Rs 730 crore. Following this upgrade, four existing train services have been extended to Nepalganj Road.

Historical Context

The Nepalganj Road-Nanpara-Bahraich metre-gauge rail section was originally constructed in 1886. With the completion of the gauge conversion and electrification, this section is now integrated into the BG railway network.

Benefits of the Upgrade

The upgrade will enhance rail connectivity to several key stations, including Bahraich, Risiya, Matera, Nanpara, Babaganj, and Nepalganj Road. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and other dignitaries inaugurated the gauge conversion and electrification of this rail section.

"This project has connected the section to the wider BG railway network," said Vaishnaw during a virtual address. He also noted that the BG conversion program is nearing completion across India.
