The United States has launched new airstrikes on Iranian targets, prompting counterstrikes by Tehran that have targeted American interests in Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, and Iraq. This escalation has raised concerns about a wider renewal of hostilities following a flare-up last weekend.
Recent Developments
On Wednesday, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported an "intense ballistic missile attack" on the US Marine Corps base Camp Titin in Jordan. The Jordanian army confirmed it intercepted 10 ballistic missiles fired from Iran, but did not report any injuries or damage to the US training camp located near the Gulf of Aqaba, close to the borders with Israel and Saudi Arabia. Three other missiles reportedly landed in remote areas.
In Kuwait, missile and drone attacks were also reported, with the army responding to Iranian hostilities. Agence France-Presse reporters in Bahrain heard alert sirens for airborne attacks early on Wednesday. The IRGC claimed it struck a US base in Erbil, Iraq.
US Response
US Central Command (CentCom) stated it had completed a new wave of strikes targeting the IRGC, which were in response to attempted attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American service members. The Iranian Red Crescent reported that four people, including a child, were killed and over 50 were wounded when shrapnel from a US missile attack hit a home during a wedding celebration in Kuhestak.
