The Dutch central bank has relocated 86 tonnes of its gold reserves from the US and Canada to London, citing "increasing geopolitical unrest". This strategic move aims to enhance the bank's ability to respond swiftly in a crisis situation.

Improved Deployability

According to De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), gold reserves stored in London can be traded more easily than those in New York and Ottawa. The bank stated:

"This makes it the quickest for DNB to deploy in a crisis situation."

Olaf Sleijpen, DNB’s president, emphasized the importance of strengthening resilience and preparedness, even though the bank assumes it will never need to deploy the gold.

Current Gold Holdings

As of the end of 2025, the total Dutch gold stock was 612.4 tonnes, valued at €72.2 billion (approximately $83.7 billion). Prior to the transfer, the distribution of gold reserves was as follows:

  • 31.3% in New York
  • 19.7% in Ottawa

After the move, the distribution changed to:

  • 18.5% in New York
  • 18.5% in Ottawa
  • 32.1% in London
  • 30.8% in the Netherlands
